As designers, our experiments are always self-explorative.
Careful introspections to comprehend an ever-diverse spectrum of human need. –And while my experiences cannot mirror all vulnerable communities, growing up within the Foster Care system has codified a intimate understanding of civic design challenges. Throughout 2017, I turned my attention inward to study myself. Then, with support from agencies of both New York and California we guided civicists, and technologists through engineering responses that would identify and address pivotal pain-points within the Family Experience Journey. These open-sourced outcomes helped many. –Revealing the dynamics of a broader byzantine enterprise, and underscoring lessons of acceptance which exist in our private (often unspoken), personal experience.
To approach system reform responsibly, we began by raising our vocabulary around what was precedent.
We isolate the needs of each stakeholder to rank and prioritize how these resources contribute to a the broader vision.
Quant + qualitive studies are pit against lived experience. Here the journey of each stakeholder; Parent, Child, Caseworker, Administration, Attorney, Therapist, reveals how decisions happening overtly and in private affect downstream outcomes.
To understand the opportunity holistically, we model the
systems of governance, then negotiate who will own these systems, and how they will evolve for the better.
